Artist Bio

boyChild was initially inspired to start creating music in the early 90’s when pirate radio was the main source of new and exciting music. Hours would be spent taping and cataloguing these shows on cassettes accompanied by constant aerial tweaking. A chance discovery of a copy of MED (a basic tracker music program) meant that this boy’s life would now follow a different path.

After many years locked away studying his craft, boyChild at last settled on his own sound. Described by others as beautiful and melancholic, it is electronic in its construction, but with an organic and human feel to it. With glitching electronic noises working alongside real piano, violin and cello part the result is a unique combination of cold and warm, sad and uplifting. The genre is hard to pin down, and this is deliberate.

Influences (but not necessarily sound-a-likes) include modern classical/soundtrack artists such as Craig Armstrong, Philip Glass, Hans Zimmer, to electronic artists like Venetian Snares, The Flashbulb and of course The Prodigy, who were a large influence in boyChild’s formative years.

A humble studio setup keeps things simple and allows ideas to form quickly and naturally. The technology comes second place to letting a story be told. Each musical project is based around a particular memory, often from childhood.

Our newest member to the Three Sixty fold. His first release will be the single “Counting What Ifs,” featuring Soundmouse.

Soundmouse
Soundmouse, so called because of her sweet and soft, almost delicate vocal sound, has always been musical, playing piano from a very young age. Initially attracted to the technology and production side of music, singing wasn’t part of her master plan at first. But a chance meeting with a Bristol dubstep producer called Phaeleh quickly whisked her from obscurity into an emerging scene, suddenly finding her vocals on a Ministry of Sound Compilation and as an NME download of the week, amongst other things.

Soundmouse’s intention with vocals is to convey emotion in the sound and tone, focusing on the delivery of words. The overall sound is soft with layers and harmonies to build intensity subtly, instead of the usual diva-like belters.

Vocal influences include the Icelandic Emilliana Torrini and Bjork. Her musical influences vary quite a bit, usually combining her passion for folk and acoustic music with glitchy electronica. These include Nosaj Thing, Mum, Bibio, The Tiny and Nick Drake.

As well as several collaborative projects as a singer, Soundmouse is also currently working on her debut E.P. encompassing elements of laptop folk and glitch, fused with delicate vocal melodies, and there is much more to come….

How did boyChild come to be? What is the significance of the boyChild character?

Well, for as long as I can remember my younger sister has called me boychild. I don’t know when it started, or why, but it seemed to stick and so it was the obvious choice for an alter ego. The idea of having this other character front my musical output appealed to me. I wanted something to hide behind ‘cos I’m shy. And when I stumbled across this designer who had these illustrations of the boy character it all just seemed to fit. I had been making music years ago, very different to what I make now, but then I stopped, for quite some time. Personal events led me to get inspired to do it again, and with a new and more focused direction. And this time I had a name and an identity.

This is our third compilation, which show-cases some of Three Sixty’s favorite new and old songs, with some old favs from our archives. Jonny Alford who was discovered playing music in a small train station waiting -room in Cookham, UK. Sr Mandril, Electro 7 and Space Funghi Project of Mexico City, and a couple of invited artists who we love, All India Radio and Man Or Mouse, this compilation shows the wide range of music at Three Sixty Records.

We have asked a couple of guest artists we love to join our usual suspects of this compilation.

ManorMouse
We are ManOrMouse? and together we are strong!.. .. Beck and Bowie busk on the Pavement outside La Roxy, while Benny Hill passes round the hat.

All India Radio
Conceived in 1999 as an experimental music outlet for Martin Kennedy, All India Radio has steadily evolved into a ‘chilltronica’ outfit easily combining genres such as ambient, lo-fi, world music, post-rock into deep lush and cinematic soundscapes. Their music has been used in CSI: Miami, One Tree Hill, Michael Moore’s hit film Sicko, Australia’s long running hit Bondi Rescue, Bondi Bali, Big Brother and many more.

The band has been nominated for an Australian music Industry ARIA Award, toured the USA and worked with Australian music legends The Church’s Steve Kilbey (who wrote the magical ‘Under The Milky way’ rediscovered by the world in the hit movie ‘Donnie Darko’) and Graham Lee (The Triffids, KLF).

“Since the turn of the 21st century, All India Radio has mashed the ambient-hop signatures of DJ Shadow, Tortoise and Thievery Corporation with the instantly recognizable guitar soundtracking of Ennio Morricone and Angelo Badalamenti. The resulting narcotic musical textures are capable of floating listeners to galaxies far, far away.” wired.com

Album Notes

“Space Funghi Project Sound like a night out listening to Red Holt, Miles Davis and Malo Playing together, with a long cocktail session in the Mos Eisley Bar.”

Their unique programming and production style with blending of live instrumentation (drums, bass, guitar and sax), results in a hybrid of unique sounds on this album.

Recording sessions consisted of endless hours of playing improvisations and hypnotic live loops, with the microphones in the room recording all the time.

Then fusing these sounds with elements of ambient, lounge, drum n’ bass, rock and psychedelic electronics creating an album of future jazz monsters, but you have to judge that for yourselves.

Their music helps paint a picture of the spectacular sunsets in the bands’ native sunny Mexico.

All trained musicians (and you can here that down to the drums), these guys met while working on a TV show in Mexico. During the break when they jammed they had an idea that now is The Space Funghi Project.

Space Funghi create a unique sound, with great production, that lays somewhere in-between Amon Tobin and Underworld.

Three Sixty Records is proud to release recordings from the Cambodian Living Arts project. Three Sixty will be giving 100% of income from song sales back to CLA to help support the program. Many of these songs are used in every day Cambodian Life to celebrate a birth or marriage, or to mourn the dead. Some of these songs have not been recorded since the Khmer Rouge was in control of the country, with people using 20th generation cassette tapes at funerals, distorted from the cloning. CLA is playing a large part in recording and hopefully saving through music schools 2,000 years of art and music from vanishing into recordings and history.

Information

cla1image_cla_windowThree Sixty Records is proud to release recordings from the Cambodian Living Arts project. Three Sixty will be giving 100% of income from song sales back to CLA to help support the program.

Cambodian Living Arts just finished building a new studio in Phnom Pen, and these are the first recordings to emerge, produced by our good friend Peter Mayer, with help from Peter Gabriel, Dickie Chappel and the Real World Studios, with donations of equipment, help, support and advice.

Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) was founded eight years ago by Arn Chorn-Pond, a Cambodian-American refugee who was featured in the Emmy-nominated movie, The Flute Player. Originally called the Cambodian Masters Performing Project (CMPP), Arn founded this organization when he first returned to Cambodia in order to support the music teachers who helped him survive the horrors of the Khmer Rouge.

Approximately ninety percent of Cambodia’s performing artists died during the Khmer Rouge regime, a devastating blow to all of Cambodia’s oral traditions. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, this cultural tragedy was compounded by two subsequent decades of economic hardship, when very few of the surviving master musicians could make a living performing or teaching.

Cambodian Living Arts, a project of World Education, works to support the revival of traditional Khmer performing arts and to inspire contemporary artistic expression. CLA supports arts education, mentorship, networking opportunities, education, career development, and income generating projects for master performing artists who survived the Khmer Rouge as well as the next generation of student artists. We work with the vision that by the year 2020, Cambodia will experience a cultural renaissance so dynamic that the arts will become the country’s international signature.

In doing so, CLA empowers arts students and masters to develop the performance skills and social and professional networks that will help them to make a living through the arts. Since 2003, the number of performances by masters and students has increased by 400% due to CLA’s support; consequently, some performing groups earn from $200-$4,000+ more in income each year from performances alone. Through the performing program, Cambodian Living Arts supports the masters and students to take better advantage of the changing opportunities available to them.
