Artist Bio

boyChild was initially inspired to start creating music in the early 90’s when pirate radio was the main source of new and exciting music. Hours would be spent taping and cataloguing these shows on cassettes accompanied by constant aerial tweaking. A chance discovery of a copy of MED (a basic tracker music program) meant that this boy’s life would now follow a different path.

After many years locked away studying his craft, boyChild at last settled on his own sound. Described by others as beautiful and melancholic, it is electronic in its construction, but with an organic and human feel to it. With glitching electronic noises working alongside real piano, violin and cello part the result is a unique combination of cold and warm, sad and uplifting. The genre is hard to pin down, and this is deliberate.

Influences (but not necessarily sound-a-likes) include modern classical/soundtrack artists such as Craig Armstrong, Philip Glass, Hans Zimmer, to electronic artists like Venetian Snares, The Flashbulb and of course The Prodigy, who were a large influence in boyChild’s formative years.

A humble studio setup keeps things simple and allows ideas to form quickly and naturally. The technology comes second place to letting a story be told. Each musical project is based around a particular memory, often from childhood.

Our newest member to the Three Sixty fold. His first release will be the single “Counting What Ifs,” featuring Soundmouse.

Soundmouse
Soundmouse, so called because of her sweet and soft, almost delicate vocal sound, has always been musical, playing piano from a very young age. Initially attracted to the technology and production side of music, singing wasn’t part of her master plan at first. But a chance meeting with a Bristol dubstep producer called Phaeleh quickly whisked her from obscurity into an emerging scene, suddenly finding her vocals on a Ministry of Sound Compilation and as an NME download of the week, amongst other things.

Soundmouse’s intention with vocals is to convey emotion in the sound and tone, focusing on the delivery of words. The overall sound is soft with layers and harmonies to build intensity subtly, instead of the usual diva-like belters.

Vocal influences include the Icelandic Emilliana Torrini and Bjork. Her musical influences vary quite a bit, usually combining her passion for folk and acoustic music with glitchy electronica. These include Nosaj Thing, Mum, Bibio, The Tiny and Nick Drake.

As well as several collaborative projects as a singer, Soundmouse is also currently working on her debut E.P. encompassing elements of laptop folk and glitch, fused with delicate vocal melodies, and there is much more to come….

How did boyChild come to be? What is the significance of the boyChild character?

Well, for as long as I can remember my younger sister has called me boychild. I don’t know when it started, or why, but it seemed to stick and so it was the obvious choice for an alter ego. The idea of having this other character front my musical output appealed to me. I wanted something to hide behind ‘cos I’m shy. And when I stumbled across this designer who had these illustrations of the boy character it all just seemed to fit. I had been making music years ago, very different to what I make now, but then I stopped, for quite some time. Personal events led me to get inspired to do it again, and with a new and more focused direction. And this time I had a name and an identity.

This is our third compilation, which show-cases some of Three Sixty’s favorite new and old songs, with some old favs from our archives. Jonny Alford who was discovered playing music in a small train station waiting -room in Cookham, UK. Sr Mandril, Electro 7 and Space Funghi Project of Mexico City, and a couple of invited artists who we love, All India Radio and Man Or Mouse, this compilation shows the wide range of music at Three Sixty Records.

We have asked a couple of guest artists we love to join our usual suspects of this compilation.

ManorMouse
We are ManOrMouse? and together we are strong!.. .. Beck and Bowie busk on the Pavement outside La Roxy, while Benny Hill passes round the hat.

All India Radio
Conceived in 1999 as an experimental music outlet for Martin Kennedy, All India Radio has steadily evolved into a ‘chilltronica’ outfit easily combining genres such as ambient, lo-fi, world music, post-rock into deep lush and cinematic soundscapes. Their music has been used in CSI: Miami, One Tree Hill, Michael Moore’s hit film Sicko, Australia’s long running hit Bondi Rescue, Bondi Bali, Big Brother and many more.

The band has been nominated for an Australian music Industry ARIA Award, toured the USA and worked with Australian music legends The Church’s Steve Kilbey (who wrote the magical ‘Under The Milky way’ rediscovered by the world in the hit movie ‘Donnie Darko’) and Graham Lee (The Triffids, KLF).

“Since the turn of the 21st century, All India Radio has mashed the ambient-hop signatures of DJ Shadow, Tortoise and Thievery Corporation with the instantly recognizable guitar soundtracking of Ennio Morricone and Angelo Badalamenti. The resulting narcotic musical textures are capable of floating listeners to galaxies far, far away.” wired.com

Information

This Album is a catalog of the music of Khmer Life – birth, coming of age, religious ordination, marriage, illness and death. A tapestry of human experience told in music and song. Three Sixty Records is proud to release recordings from the Cambodian Living Arts project.

Three Sixty will be giving 100% of income from song sales back to CLA to help support the program.

Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) was founded eight years ago by Arn Chorn-Pond, a Cambodian-American refugee who was featured in the Emmy-nominated movie, The Flute Player. Originally called the Cambodian Masters Performing Project (CMPP), Arn founded this organization when he first returned to Cambodia in order to support the music teachers who helped him survive the horrors of the Khmer Rouge.

Approximately ninety percent of Cambodia?s performing artists died during the Khmer Rouge regime, a devastating blow to all of Cambodia?s oral traditions. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, this cultural tragedy was compounded by two subsequent decades of economic hardship, when very few of the surviving master musicians could make a living performing or teaching.

Cambodian Living Arts, a project of World Education, works to support the revival of traditional Khmer performing arts and to inspire contemporary artistic expression. CLA supports arts education, mentorship, networking opportunities, education, career development, and income generating projects for master performing artists who survived the Khmer Rouge as well as the next generation of student artists. We work with the vision that by the year 2020, Cambodia will experience a cultural renaissance so dynamic that the arts will become the country?s international signature. In doing so, CLA empowers arts students and masters to develop the performance skills and social and professional networks that will help them to make a living through the arts. Since 2003, the number of performances by masters and students has increased by 400% due to CLA?s support; consequently, some performing groups earn from $200-$4,000+ more in income each year from performances alone. Through the performing program, Cambodian Living Arts supports the masters and students to take better advantage of the changing opportunities available to them.

This is the first report from Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) and deals with the Cambodian evictions from the land grab that has effected the students and the masters.

Presented by Arn Chorn-Pond. These reports were filmed, edited and completed by the students in cambodia. The DVD was then flown from Cambodia to the USA so it could be uploaded to sites.

Originally called the Cambodian Masters Performing Project (CMPP), Arn founded this organization when he first returned to Cambodia in order to support the music teachers who helped him survive the horrors of the Khmer Rouge.

CLA’s four core programs—teaching, performing, recording, and new commissions—support 16 master musicians and nearly 300 students and assistant teachers to develop skills and relationships that will enable them to generate income and develop as leaders, while also helping to preserve and celebrate their heritage.

CLA works with the belief that supporting arts education is a way for people to grow and develop and heal from the traumas and hardships of both the past and the present, not only because knowing the traditional arts keeps younger generations connected to their heritage and the elders in their community, but because through the mentoring and guidance process, the students and masters build their confidence, are able to exercise leadership skills, and nurture hopes for the future.

Three Sixty Records is working with Cambodian Living Arts (A project of World Education) to release the music from this program globally with 100% of all proceeds going back to CLA.

Album Notes

“Space Funghi Project Sound like a night out listening to Red Holt, Miles Davis and Malo Playing together, with a long cocktail session in the Mos Eisley Bar.”

Their unique programming and production style with blending of live instrumentation (drums, bass, guitar and sax), results in a hybrid of unique sounds on this album.

Recording sessions consisted of endless hours of playing improvisations and hypnotic live loops, with the microphones in the room recording all the time.

Then fusing these sounds with elements of ambient, lounge, drum n’ bass, rock and psychedelic electronics creating an album of future jazz monsters, but you have to judge that for yourselves.

Their music helps paint a picture of the spectacular sunsets in the bands’ native sunny Mexico.

All trained musicians (and you can here that down to the drums), these guys met while working on a TV show in Mexico. During the break when they jammed they had an idea that now is The Space Funghi Project.

Space Funghi create a unique sound, with great production, that lays somewhere in-between Amon Tobin and Underworld.

Sr Mandril

Sr Mandril was born in 2000 when Germán González and Ramsés Ramírez decided to mix their musical ideas. The resulting sound has electronic undertones mixed with organic instruments creating a sonic image of colors, sounds and influences that go from acid jazz and ambient to latin. Sr Mandril spend a lot of time on the road at various festivals and venues around South America, also performing at the Festival for International Jazz in Montreal in 06, and 08.

After releasing their debut album to great reviews by the music media, Sr. Mandril follow up with their strong new release Terragroove. It was recorded and produced at Media Luna in Mexico by Ramsés Ramírez and mixed by Ramsés Ramírez and Gerry Rosado. This new album again is a fusion of genres covering acid jazz, funk, folk and rock with electronic and latin percussion.

“We could just say how great we feel this album is, but it’s better you hear for yourself, just how far this band has come since its debut album.” 360

FESTIVALS: “Festival de Jazz de Montreal 2008” (Montreal 2008), “Festival de Jazz de Santa Lucía” (St. Lucia 2008), “Small World Music Festival” (Toronto 2007), “Festival Internacional de Jazz de Montreal 2006” (Montreal 2006), “Festival Luminaria” (México 2006), “Festival Puerta de Las Américas” (México 2006), “Festival Sueño Verde” (San Luis Potosí 2005), “Festival CumbreTajín” (Veracruz 2004), “Festival Xcéntrico” (México 2004), “Festival del Despertar” (Morelos 2003)

ROLLING STONE LATIN AMERICA

“With an excellent mix of lounge and acid jazz, Sr Mandril conquered the audience in both presentations at the 27th edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Ramsés Ramírez and Germán González captivated the audience with their music…”

FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE JAZZ DE MONTREAL

(THIS IS THE SOUND OF MEXICO RIGHT NOW) Sr. Mandril have a goal: merge electro elements with thoroughly live guitar, bass, keys and percussion. The payoff: a crossbreed of acid jazz, ambient, lounge, trip hop and house with latin rhythm and flair. This is the sound of Mexico right now.

Three Sixty Records is proud to release recordings from the Cambodian Living Arts project. Three Sixty will be giving 100% of income from song sales back to CLA to help support the program. Many of these songs are used in every day Cambodian Life to celebrate a birth or marriage, or to mourn the dead. Some of these songs have not been recorded since the Khmer Rouge was in control of the country, with people using 20th generation cassette tapes at funerals, distorted from the cloning. CLA is playing a large part in recording and hopefully saving through music schools 2,000 years of art and music from vanishing into recordings and history.

jtfimage_grace_windowThe Debut single from Jimmy The Fingers is a positive message to all the girls out there, in a way only Jimmy The Fingers could do. The Single comes with remixes from The Melovskys of Mexico City and Darkhorse from San Francisco.

Look out for the increasingly popular video to the single shot by Steve Glashier at Nothing To See Here productions, with a little help from a lot of friends, and fast becoming a hit on youtube

Born under a bad sign between a rock and a hard place, Jimmy soon hit the skids and took to loitering outside the local chip shop in his cape, playing his demo on an old ghetto blaster whilst scrabbling around for titbits and narrowly avoiding kebab meat thrown at him. Darkhorse of Three Sixty Records heard the tape, found him covered in chips in a nearby ditch, dusted him down, and discovered the kid actually had some talent, taking him on and producing him for release on Three Sixty.

Imagine Prince and Beck fighting over cider, Frank Zappa and Jack Johnson taking bets in the corner, dirty electro’s playing in the background and you’ve got the Jimmy The Fingers sound.

In his youth Jimmy busted out toons with his equally greasy mates under the monikers Superdense Child and Zooface, and as a DJ has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Afrika Bambaata, Radio One’s Breezeblock show, Rahzel, Krafty Kuts, The Herbaliser, Fatboy Slim, Bonobo, and many more. He played keys in bands with Quantic, TM Juke, and Alice Russell from blossoming Brighton label Tru Thoughts. Then he found out he could sing, giving two fingers to the lot of em. Nowadays he works live with Kaoss Pads, synths and a cape. Jimmy The Fingers writes about life as he sees it: a joyous and just plain silly occasion, marred only by the wonders of temptation and melancholy. His musical stylings ever changing, he’s always one step ahead of the kids.

Update:

We are proud to announce that the album Global Drum Project won a Grammy last night for “Best Contemporary World Music Album.” Our very own Darkhorse aka Graham Shrimpton of Three Sixty Records worked on the project along side Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain and Jonah Sharp as part of the producer crew. “Working with such musical knowledge and talent, I learned a lot on the Global Drum Project.” said Graham Shrimpton.

Graham has Just finished the music for the Documentary “Justicia Now,” and is now working on music for a documentary about the culling of Wolves, as well as producing Three Sixty’s new signing Jimmy The Fingers, and trying to finish the new Fishbunny Album.

Review in Washington Post.

Global Drum Project

Global Drum Project is on Shout Factory
Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart’s innovative Planet Drum CD convened some of the world’s finest drum talent for a collaboration that won the very first GRAMMY for world music—bringing together Nigerian drum legend Babatunde Olatunji, Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Nigerian talking drum ace Sikiru Adepoju, and Puerto Rico’s master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, among others. The 1991 album spent an unprecedented 26 weeks at #1 on the Billboard world music chart, and continues to sell as a perennial favorite.

Fifteen years later, the musical partnership of Hart and Hussain—which began with their groundbreaking 1970s world fusion experiment Diga Rhythm Band—resumes, with a fresh collaboration of tranced-out grooves, elegant electronic programming and hypnotic tuned percussion and again enlists the great partnership of Adepoju and Hidalgo. This time they are joined by Taufiq Qureshi on percussion & vocals, Niladari Kumar on sitar, Dilshad Khan on sarangi, and the late, great Olatunji in sampled vocals from the original sessions. Elements from Hart’s various world music recordings, including the Kaluli tribespeople of Papua New Guinea’s rainforest, are woven with the live performances into a danceable, multi-textured celebration of rhythm.

Jonny Alford sent us this lovely version of the christmas song Silent Night.
It was written in 1816 by Josef Mohr

This song was sung simultaneously in English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914 in World War I, as it was one of the few carols that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.

We thought we would put this up for a free download

Arthur C Clarke

“The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.”

Arthur C. Clarke

“Sometimes I think we’re alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we’re not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.”

Arthur C. Clarke
“I’m sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne and the people who write about this and made people think about it. I’m rather proud of the fact that I know several astronauts who became astronauts through reading my books.”

Arthur C. Clarke

“A hundred years ago, the electric telegraph made possible – indeed, inevitable – the United States of America. The communications satellite will make equally inevitable a United Nations of Earth; let us hope that the transition period will not be equally bloody.”

Arthur C. Clarke, First on the Moon, 1970
